“Commission for Beacon Rise Primary: Stainless steel badger, dove, and chicken sculptures celebrating nature and heritage.”
I was recently commissioned by Beacon Rise Primary School in Kingswood to create a trio of stainless steel sculptures for their grounds: a Badger, a Fan-Tailed Dove, and a Chicken with its Chick.
A Nod to Bristol’s Heritage Beacon Rise is a school that celebrates its history—from its Victorian buildings to the panoramic views of Bristol, a city famous for the SS Great Britain and Concorde. It felt fitting to introduce stainless steel art into this environment. It connects the natural subjects of the sculptures with the city's rich engineering legacy.
Creating a Stimulating Environment The school’s mission is to provide a "secure, stimulating, and memorable" environment where children can achieve their full potential. Public art plays a huge role in this.
The Chicken & Chick represent nurturing and growth.
The Badger connects the children to the local wildlife found in the surrounding fields.
The Fan-Tailed Dove brings a sense of peace and spirit to the grounds.
These pieces are designed to be durable, tactile, and permanent additions to the school community, hopefully inspiring the next generation of Bristol’s creators and engineers.
