“A bespoke stainless steel sculpture of an adult badger and cub. Commissioned by the Woodland Trust and installed natively on the forest floor at Bishops Knoll Wood, Bristol.”
Commissioned by the Woodland Trust, this site-specific installation brings a permanent touch of native wildlife to the historic pathways of Bishops Knoll Wood in Bristol.
The sculpture captures a tender and natural scene: an adult Badger (Meles meles) foraging alongside its young cub. To ensure the piece harmonises with its wild surroundings, the animals are installed directly at ground level on the woodland floor, emerging from the undergrowth beneath the canopy of ancient trees.
Crafted entirely from stainless steel, the piece heavily utilises my signature bead-welding technique. By layering thousands of individual welds, I recreated the dense, coarse texture of a badger's coat. This rugged, organic surface contrasts beautifully with the smoother, burnished finish used for their snouts, ears, and strong digging claws. As the steel weathers subtly into the environment, these badgers stand as enduring guardians of the woods, celebrating the Woodland Trust's mission to protect and cherish native habitats.
