Dolphins, Cotham Gardens Primary School

Tursiops truncatus

Stainless steel dolphin sculpture commissioned for Cotham Gardens Primary School. The design is seamlessly integrated into the entrance railings.

Commissioned by Cotham Gardens Primary School (formerly Colston's Primary School), this bespoke stainless steel sculpture is integrated directly into the railings outside the school's main entrance.

The piece features a graceful pair of dolphins—an adult and a calf—swimming side-by-side. To capture the sleek, hydrodynamic nature of these marine mammals, the metal was worked into a smooth, highly polished finish that gleams in the natural light, contrasting beautifully with the matte stone of the school building behind it.

One of the most effective elements of this design is how it interacts with the functional architecture. By weaving two gently curved, horizontal steel "waves" through the rigid vertical bars of the gate, the dolphins appear to be effortlessly gliding through the water. It serves as a permanent, playful greeting for the students as they arrive each morning.
