“A life-sized sculpture of a Great Blue Heron. Features heat-tinted iridescent wings and a statuesque, alert posture perfect for water features.”
The Great Blue Heron is the embodiment of stillness, often found standing statue-like in the shallows waiting for prey. This life-sized sculpture captures that signature posture—neck elongated, head high, and dagger-like bill poised for action.
Crafted from stainless steel, this piece emphasises the contrast between the bird's sleek, serpentine neck and the dense layering of its body plumage. I utilised individual steel plates to create the shingled appearance of the wing feathers. To achieve the "blue" of the heron, the steel was selectively heat-tinted, drawing out a spectrum of iridescent purples, indigos, and warm bronzes that shimmer as the light changes. The sculpture is finished with the heron’s characteristic wispy head plumes, rendered in delicate steel wire, adding a final touch of grace to this wetland hunter.
