Meerkat

A larger than life-sized, textured steel sculpture of a sitting meerkat. A foundational piece of wildlife art exploring alert posture and texture.

This larger than life-sized Meerkat is one of my foundational wildlife studies, capturing the species' iconic upright "sentry" posture. Unlike the smooth, polished finishes of my later works, this piece features a heavily textured, organic surface that mimics the coarse, sandy fur of a meerkat on watch.

Crafted from hand-worked steel, the sculpture emphasises the animal's alert silhouette—head tilted back and eyes scanning the horizon. The dark, weathered patina of the metal adds a sense of ancient resilience to the form. Though it was created early in my practice, the piece remains a permanent fixture in my own home, serving as both a personal landmark and a reminder of the inquisitive, social spirit that first drew me to sculpting the natural world.
