Endurance, Hargreaves Lansdown

A large-scale conceptual sculpture at the Bristol Harbourside. "The Pod" explores evolution and mathematics through steel and copper forms.

Commissioned for the Bristol headquarters of Hargreaves Lansdown, "Endurance" is a conceptual exploration of growth, evolution, and the infinite. The piece applies the complex fractal mathematics of the Mandelbrot set to the concept of biological evolution, visualizing the pod as a universal generator capable of creating infinite variation from a single set of building blocks.

The design intentionally plays with the "chicken and egg" paradox; the pod resembles a copper-toned egg while the stainless steel root emerging from it takes the form of a chicken’s foot. Drawing inspiration from 1950s sci-fi and the heroic age of exploration, the sculpture is named after Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance. It further nods to Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy with the designation "Ark class A 42." This installation is a celebration of intellectual curiosity, fueled—as I often say—by hope and $\pi$ alone.
