“"Titus," a life-sized steel sculpture of a Marine Iguana. Featuring a rugged, oxidized texture and narrative detailing, this piece captures the prehistoric spirit of the Galapagos.”
Titus is a life-sized sculpture of a Marine Iguana (Amblyrhynchus cristatus), the world's only sea-going lizard. This piece captures the prehistoric, dragon-like appearance of the species, defined by its blunt snout, heavy claws, and the row of dorsal spines running down its back.
Distinct from my polished stainless steel works, Titus features a heavily textured, oxidized finish. I achieved this rugged, "armored" surface by building up layers of weld to mimic the rough, salt-encrusted skin of an iguana that spends its life between cold ocean waters and hot volcanic rock. The sculpture is grounded by a heavy steel chain and a welded nametag, adding a layer of narrative intrigue—suggesting a story of captivity, companionship, or perhaps a nod to the Victorian era of collecting exotic specimens.
