“Bespoke stainless steel railing panels for Waitrose Welwyn Garden City. A botanical tribute to the historic "Cherry Tree" pub and music venue.”
This series of bespoke railing panels was commissioned for Waitrose Welwyn Garden City to serve as a functional safety barrier along the walkway transitioning from the upper car park to the main store. However, the design serves a deeper purpose: it is a permanent tribute to the site's rich cultural history.
Built on the grounds of the former "Cherry Tree" public house, a beloved local landmark that evolved from a 1920s social hub to a legendary rock venue hosting bands like Led Zeppelin, the artwork ensures the name is never forgotten.
Crafted from stainless steel, each panel frames a stylised cherry tree in full fruit. The trunks feature my signature welded texture, contrasting with the smooth, delicate leaves and spherical cherries that hang from the radiating branches. By replacing standard industrial fencing with these handcrafted botanical studies, the installation softens the modern architecture and honors the "Garden City" heritage of the location.
